Flowers overpower Tantallon 2013-02-24 11:29:59
It was on a sunny day in Tuulneas when suddenly Shiftpile asked, "Why are there flowers here?" It turned out that plants of a feather flock together.

Shiftpile was busy having a debate on cactus aesthetics with a congregation of tulip, rose and lily of the valley when our reporter showed up. (Calandryll had suggested that the defloration of the city center would soon be reported by the Dalairi press, so we had to beat the writers of that stinking fish wrap to the scoop!)

The situation was soon declared a floral demonstration at the Tantallon crossroads. Several additional shapeshifter flowers, including Polymorph the mimeon mimicking the others, soon appeared to participate in the uprising. They demanded sacrifices - and no plain shrubberies would do!

As it became clear that the demonstrators refused to back-petal on their requirement for offerings, Corki, Spoo, Bass and Riddick arrived to provide. By the time we got knocked out by the overwhelming perfume at the site, 32 different flowers were already a part of the movement!

The most incredible flower discovered must be the "napalm death-coloured wildflower", brought in by Spoo. A close second in terms of creativity would be a folded parchment flower, though. Several of the offerings, such as avalanche lilies, lovely lupines, white roses and cream coloured flowers our reporters could not guess the picking location of - just the things for a scavenger hunt...

The flower children thank all who participated!

Poet Board: One more heartbeat 2013-02-04 10:54:17
One more heartbeat, by Wispy

I'm ready for you to go,
I'd be selfish to say "stay",
When you've roamed here, oh, so long,
And wiped such tears away.

But let me hold you one more time,
Then I'll say goodbye.
Let me wrap my arms around you,
So away you can fly.

Just tell me one more story,
I'll finally bow away,
Grace me with your voice, again,
Vanish, then, you may.

Let us herald one more sunrise,
Let us treasure one last dusk,
We'll struggle through the night, together,
The next day is a must...

I'm ready for you to go,
As long as you're aware,
Just another pause with you,
A heartbeat we can share.

Dedicated to my grandmother, a resilient, witty, loving soul.

Favourites of the Press 2012 2013-01-06 13:30:55
In honour of the 20th anniversary, the perfectly objective and neutral press of AA has decided to grant Favourites of the Press titles to thank extraordinary folks for making AA cool. If you feel your favourite is not in this list, you ought to be making your own suggestion on the praise board or by mailing Letters for next year!

To celebrate this grand gala event, and because an hour earlier Sockpuppet and Hephaestia randomly happened to suggest it, we also held a celebratory Monk Picnic at the Neville temple gardens. It was also a sort of a closing for the anniversary year, with birthday cake, veggie sandwiches, chocolate, wine, ale and various bakery products. Doublezz brought dates, drugs and a maze for dessert. Visiting part-Monks Smiths, Ditzy, Calvin, Mbebe and Newt joined the Monk crew, which included Wispy and Fir in addition to the aforementioned. Orifice was cautious of using free alcohol as a recruitment method, and opted to only participate in spirit.

Without further ado, here are the Favourites of the Press 2012:

Pai, Senior Door Mage and Bookworm Extraordinaire.

Brother Pai the enlightened has been one of the first cornerstones of the unrelenting group who these days plant dozens of dimension doors around the realm to make distant worlds be close for the rest of us. He has also received praise as a good friend and for bringing colour to the realm. We will miss him!

Bazhi, Craziest Completion (Later Reopened).

Bazhi was the first player to reach the unreachable level 50, the first non-fighter to reach the maximum skill in all weapons, and later to the first and so far only person to pop the maximum amount of experience that was possible to gain on AA. He died a few times on the way, too, despite being thoroughly munchkin at the time. The maximum has since then been worked around, and Ancient Anguish did not meet a fiery end at the final experience point after all. Bazhi is still around, but rumour does not tell what he is working on now. He is praised as a helpful guildmate and good friend.

Scarecrazy, Little Mother of Ancient Anguish.

For the editor-in-chief, Scarecrazy is long-time mentor, encourager and protector of sanity. For many others, she is the person who got them to join us or come back, motivation to keep going, or simply the person who seems to be able to get along with just about anyone. For producing this social glue at our volunteer workplace, she is nominated Little Mother of Ancient Anguish.

Thank you!

Memorial room, updates and Holiday Stars 2013-01-05 03:21:04
The Monks of Antana mourn the passing of their fallen Brothers and Sisters with a new memorial room. Go there to say your final goodbyes to Monks who have made an impression on your life. And try out the gong while you're at it.

This addition was brought to you by Wispy and Newt.

In other news, a bunch of bugs have been fixed again, grisly details can be found at the bugs board. But as a specific note, there's minor additional features as well:

Wielded weapons can now be referred to as 'primary weapon', 'main-hand flail', 'off-hand knife' and various other syntaxes. The help file for wield will be updated shortly.

Decker's accepts 'sell all torch/etc' syntax now. Once the bugs are found and squished, this will be extend to other shops and 'buy all x' added as well.

Two rounds of Holiday AA Stars were run, with Levek, Zeroth and Dragonblood winning the first batch, and Levek, Nym and Dragonblood the second. (Is there some kind of pattern here?) Facebook announcements for upcoming stars/trivia in 1-2 hours turned out to pull in several additional players. Thanks all for playing!

The wrath of the turkeys 2012-11-25 06:01:51
On a fine night of Nethory of 629, a gobbling sound could be heard in the distance. We had gotten used to the idea that every couple of years, the turkey population would peak in... that place they live in normally, and cause them to wander out of their homes and appear even in the outskirts of Tantallon.

But this time, something was wrong. The sound was getting louder.

Much louder.

Suddenly, we found ourselves under assault by a deranged flock of turkeys! Rumour got out that they had leaders that were particularly vicious, but it is hard to tell one turkey apart from another so a surgical strike was impossible. We took down three wave leaders, two of whom landed fell into Otter's claws and promptly expired before causing extensive harm. Darvinia took care of the third.

It took almost an hour before Tantallon was liberated; the streets ran red with blood and turkey carcasses piled up everywhere. Armageddon threatened that he would bring down fire and brimstone to be sure that every last turkey would be dealt with.

We managed to fight back the turkey invasion this time. Word has it that this has happened before, long ago. Varys the numerologist has calculated that the strange events of today may yet recur as the history moves in cycles, and the fowl will strike with even greater numbers. Protesters in Nepeth demand that the King prepare his armies for the worst, while peacekeepers in Gemynd have started training on how to not be debilitated by binge eating. It never hurts to prepare, after all.
